Many gifted healthcare professionals leave the mission field early. Often the reason isn't a lack of calling or skill; it's a poor fit. Clinicians in resource-limited settings face stressors that other cross-cultural workers rarely do: high patient mortality, life-and-death decisions without adequate resources, and the constant inner voice asking, "Could I have saved that patient?" When the sending organization or receiving facility isn't prepared to support them, the result is often burnout, emotional injury, and early return home.
This workshop helps participants ask the right questions before they commit. Drawing on decades of experience placing healthcare professionals in mission hospitals and on years of front-line clinical service in Africa, the presenters cover the causes of attrition and how to prevent them. Participants will look at how to evaluate a sending organization's understanding of healthcare missions, how to assess a receiving facility's clinical environment, ethics, workload, and family suitability, and why the ability to change placements matters. Through real-world case studies, small-group discussion, and guided self-assessment, participants will leave with a personalized plan for choosing a placement where they and their families can serve safely, effectively, and for the long term.
